An Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is a breathalyser device installed in a vehicle, linking to its ignition system. Before starting your car, you must blow into the device. If the breath sample detects alcohol, the Interlock prevents the vehicle from starting.

The device operates by testing the driver’s breath alcohol concentration (BrAC). Should the BrAC exceed the allowed limit, the interlock stops the vehicle from starting. Following a failed breath test, the driver must wait, typically 15 minutes, before attempting to start the vehicle again.

To operate the interlock device correctly, follow the instructions provided in the device’s manual or by your service provider. Blow firmly and steadily into the mouthpiece for a minimum of 5 seconds to guarantee an accurate reading.

If you don’t pass a breath test, the interlock device will start a temporary lockout period, in accordance with state or territory regulations. Subsequent failed re-tests may extend this lockout period or necessitate a reset and tow. The retest feature allows time for any alcohol residue in the mouth to evaporate (for example mouthwash which may give result in a failed test). It’s advisable to rinse your mouth with water before testing and avoid products containing alcohol, as they can cause a “false positive reading”. Depending on program rules, multiple failed tests may be reported to your transport authority.

Items like toothpaste, mouthwash, and hand sanitiser contain traces of alcohol that may trigger a positive reading. Some medications and foods also have this effect. Environmental factors such as windshield washer fluid and gasoline fumes contain alcohol and may unintentionally trigger the device. If you fail a test and haven’t consumed alcohol:

• take a moment to rinse your mouth
• check your surroundings for any alcohol containing items
• ensure there is adequate ventilation in your vehicle and try again as prompted by the device.

Remember, even if you drank alcohol the previous evening and attempt to start your vehicle in the morning, your BrAC may still be elevated enough to trigger a fail. It’s best practice to abstain from alcohol entirely during your program.

If you don’t allow sufficient time for alcohol to dissipate from your mouth, a “FAIL” may be recorded in the device’s memory. You’ll have the chance to re-test, and rinsing your mouth with water can assist in this process. Adapting routines to accommodate an interlock can be challenging initially, but it becomes more manageable over time.

Common products containing alcohol include hand sanitiser, air fresheners, windshield wiper fluid, cleaning products, and wipes. Many foods also contain trace amounts of alcohol; for instance, vanilla extract is one example that may not be immediately apparent. Additionally, it’s advisable to avoid tobacco, coffee, and vaping while using an interlock.

Lifesafer places a high priority on the accuracy of their ignition interlock device (IID). One method the company employs to guarantee accuracy is through a process known as calibration. During calibration, the device undergoes scrutiny to verify its provision of precise breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) readings. This can involve using a known alcohol solution or having an individual blow into the device with a known BrAC. The device’s readings are then cross-referenced with the known BrAC to ascertain its accuracy.

It’s crucial to recognise that the accuracy of the interlock also hinges on the proper usage and maintenance of the device by the customer, including routine calibration checks and adherence to the manufacturer’s instructions.
